Kay – As a relative newcomer to the fabulous antique world I just had to tell you what a great resource your site is becoming for me. I am a photographer on the staff of an antique furniture company, but prior to joining this team I had no real experience with antiques. After spending some time here I am surprising myself (and my co-workers!) with my newfound knowledge about my subject material. Just today I was able to correctly guess that a bed I was shooting was built prior to 1830 because it used no screws. So, thanks! I look forward to reading and learning in the days and weeks to come.
I have a 3 drawer dresser that I recently had taken to a restoration shop and we noticed when we turned it upside down the the underside of the top is covered with news paper. It appears to be German or Dutch print and has photographs. It is very hard to make out because it has faded and the lacquer is discolored. Do you have any insight to what the paper is used for, do you have any suggestions on how to enhance so that we could date the piece.
Thank you for your time,
Brian Brewer
